Quick Reference Card
Paragraph 1: Introduction
Name, school, the role you are applying for, and one line that frames your design approach. Skip "I am writing to express my interest."
Paragraph 2: Why This Firm
Name something specific about the firm: a project, a value, a focus. Build a bridge to your own work. Explain the shared approach in your own words, not theirs.
Paragraph 3: What You Bring
One specific project + the tools you used + the outcome. Embed collaboration in the same paragraph. Show, do not list.
Paragraph 4: Closing
Thanks, a specific next step you are proposing, a clean signoff. Skip "I look forward to hearing from you."
THE GOLDEN RULE: Every sentence in your cover letter should pass this test: Does this help the reader understand why hiring me makes their team stronger? If the answer is no, cut it or rewrite it.
